Moving Checklist - Leaving Your Old Apartment

Posted on March 2, 2010 in: Renter Resources

Unfortunately, moving apartments actually involves two moves - the one out of your old apartment and the one to your new apartment. Remembering all the things that need to get done can be a pain. You know all the basics - get boxes, plan ahead, yada, yada.

It’s those annoying little things that you may forget. Here’s a checklist of the not-so-obvious to help you out (move-in tips will follow in another article).

  • When you disconnect your utilities, you may be owed deposits. Make sure they have a forwarding address. Check out one-stop websites that will take care of all of your utilities.
  • Reroute newspapers, magazines and important mail like bank statements.
  • In addition to utilities, there are other services that might need to be canceled such as lawn service, health club, pool maintenance.
  • Complete change of address form with post office (it can now be done online).
  • Check your insurance - determine whether the insurance moves with you or whether you need a new policy. Regardless, change your renter’s insurance address.
  • Think about anything that might be off premises - dry cleaner, cobbler, tailor, safe deposit box, post box, friend/neighbor, etc.
  • Schedule the move with your building to reserve the elevator, if necessary.
  • Conduct a move-out walk-through with your landlord.
  • Properly dispose of flammables and other things that might not be able to be transported safely.
  • If you are moving to a different city, get copies of your medical and dental records.
  • Defrost the freezer at least two days in advance.

Here’s one last moving tip - throw a party the weekend before you are leaving that will clear out your refrigerator and liquor cabinet. You might be serving hot dogs and Rice Krispies with Jager and Korbel, but what the heck? It’s a great way to say goodbye.
