Music is my Neighbor

Posted on March 3, 2010 in: Lindsey | Living the life

They say music is the universal language (or is that love?). Regardless, there are clearly geographical differences when it comes to live music. Back in my small town life, live music consists of random karaoke nights found at select bars where your neighbors belt out classics like ‘Friends in Low Places” and “Summer of ‘69.” While I like karaoke as much as the next, the live music scene in Chicago, though, has been music to my ears.

The sounds of live bands playing everything - hard rock, alternative hip hop, country - spill out of the crowded bars and venues and into the streets. Just going for a short walk in any neighborhood in Chicago can sound like a music festival.

Chicago is the home of blues, so blue joints (or is it joynts?) abound. Buddy Guy’s Legends is probably the most famous. I haven’t been there yet, but I’m told it is a must.

Closer to where I live, friends and co-workers have provided me a list of the go-to venues for live music. I’m itching to check out these great places:

  • The Elbo Room - Perfect for those who prefer bars and lounges, The Elbo Room offers both local and national acts featuring a wide range of music from soul and hip hop to world and alternative.
  • Martyrs’ - A nightclub known for its neighborhood bar feel, you’ll hear the sounds of alternative, Irish, oldies and rock from local and national bands at Martyrs’ most nights of the week.
  • Schubas - An intimate atmosphere, Schubas holds just 175 and features rock, folk, country, funk and others. I’ve also heard that their menu in the attached Harmony Grill rocks.
  • Double Door - A classic Chicago rock venue, Double Door books acts ranging from The Rolling Stones to promising local acts. I’m told nothing compares.

If cover prices get a little steep, Chicago’s summer festivals have you covered. With more than fifty neighborhood fests, cheap - or even free - music is everywhere. It gives you a great chance to experience the Chicago neighborhoods, with local food booths serving up the neighborhood’s ethnic specialties. Summer is just around the corner, right?

Any other suggestions? And, for those music lovers across the country, how does your city’s live music scene rank?

Speaking of music, enter to win two VIP packages to Bonnaroo (or your choice of other prizes). It’s the ultimate music fest, brought to you by WilliamPaid.

For those keeping score at home, Restaurant Week was a hit. My fav - The Berghoff.
