Apartment, Meet my Mom. Mom, This is my Apartment.

Posted on March 31, 2010 in: Lindsey | Living the life

One of the biggest tests of finally moving out on your own into the first (real) apartment is the initial visit from family and friends. I took my test this past weekend and passed with flying colors.

My mother came to visit, seeing my apartment and new life for the first time. As I prepared for her visit, I became increasingly more nervous wondering whether or not she would approve of my new lifestyle.

My fears were soon put to rest upon her first tour of my apartment, which took all of 5 minutes. She seemed to love my new home, praising the space as welcoming and comfy. Whew!

Next test came when we headed out into the city to meet up with a few of my acquaintances. We had a wonderful time at some of my favorite spots, and she seemed to approve of the people with whom I’ve surrounded myself. Test #2 passed.

The final test came with the food. While my mother is fairly easy to please, she is a great cook herself, and I really wanted to find a few places that she would love. So I took a chapter out of Restaurant Week, and we explored a new cuisine each night. I seemed to succeed gloriously as she praised my selections as authentic and delicious - the Killer Margaritas didn’t hurt either. Yum!

I asked her what she thought about my new place and was comforted by her response. “I have always been very proud of your ability to make good decisions, and, once again, you have proven to me what a responsible and sensible young lady you are.” It doesn’t get much better than hearing words like those from one of the most influential people in my life.

Overall it was a great weekend, and I think she had a great mini vacay in Chitown. The hardest part of the trip, though, always seems to come when it’s time to say goodbye again. I love my life in Chicago, but it’s my time with friends and family from home that makes me miss the comforts of the simpler life I left behind. Luckily, I will be seeing her and the rest of my family very soon, which makes saying our goodbyes a little easier. See you soon mom!
