Just when I thought I was close to the end of this long, drawn-out move, it turns out that I missed several big ticket items on my apparently-not-so-complete moving list. Argh…when will my move-in be finished??
Internet and Cable. I have now been in my apartment for about a month and a half, and not only have I been “camping” on my floor without furniture, but I also have been living without cable and Internet. In this day and age, despite the expense, these former luxuries are really basics.
Giving in to temptation, I began looking around for the best deal combining the two. The deals are out there, even if the companies make it very difficult for you to compare. The most important thing I’ve found is to not give in to the high-pressure sales when you call to get the information. Despite what they say, the “one time only” deal will probably be there when you call them back.
Renter’s Insurance. I could not believe that I had overlooked this important necessity, especially since I have seen renter’s insurance in action, helping me replace items lost in a previous fire.
Fires, break-ins and natural disasters can happen at any time. While I would rather have my personal items, it’s a comfort to know that I will be able to start over if needed. A little tip, though - be sure to do your research and find the best deal before agreeing to a rate.
A Trip to the Local DMV. As painful as the DMV will be, I need a new driver’s license as well as the proper tags and plates for my car (and, in Chicago, tack on the $75 City Sticker). I had not even realized that this was a necessity until I began speaking with others who had moved to the area and got killed with expensive tickets. Unfortunately, this is going to require some shifting in my budget.
Registering to Vote. Registering to vote completely slipped my mind until the primaries came and went. Since I was not registered in Chicago, I was unable to cast my vote - something that I take very seriously. And, in Chicago, with the motto being ‘vote early and often,’ this is a must.
Finding a New Doctor. I need to find a new doctor and dentist for all of those pesky check-ups and cleanings. I’d prefer to take care of this before something comes up. This proves no easy task, especially since some of the most recommended physicians are not taking new patients. I suggest asking your friends, neighbors and co-workers for any suggestions. Don’t forget to consider your insurance coverage as well.
I will hopefully have all of these last items finished by next week and then can officially call myself moved in. Until then, you can find me on the Internet at one of the many local cafes searching rates and deals or in line at the DMV. Wish me luck.
