Snow Day: So You’re Stuck in Your Apartment…

Posted on February 16, 2010 in: Renter Resources

Remember when you were a kid and woke up to mounds of snow? You’d gather around the television to hear whether your school was declaring a snow day. They didn’t come often, but when they did, the feeling of having pulled one over on the adults was euphoric.

As an adult, the snow days come even more infrequently. But, when then come, here are some ways to celebrate without ever leaving your apartment.

Pajamas All Day. There is nothing like still being in your pajamas at 2:00 p.m. There is something almost hedonistic about it. As the inches pile up outside, cuddle up with your coffee and a couple good movies. Shower? No way.

Cook a Homemade Dinner. How about some good ol’ fashioned comfort food to make your day that much more homey? Mashed potatoes or chicken soup would warm you up from the inside out. Or, if you lack either the ingredients or the talent, there’s always mac-and-cheese or delivery.

Walk Down Memory Lane. This serves two purposes; Not only do you get to reminisce about the good ol’ days, but you can organize your memories and photos at the same time. As you dig through the boxes of old photos, consider a chance to purge those pictures that you never want anyone to see as well as an opportunity to cut out your old boyfriend from the pictures where you look really good. No sense wasting a good picture of you. Also, in these days of digital photos, a snow day is a great chance to go through all of your online pictures and actually order prints.

Book and Bubbles. Yes, a book. If you are like many, there just isn’t much time to cuddle up with a great book - other than a bumpy ride on the train to work. Enjoy yourself with more than ten pages at a sitting. Do it in a nice bubble bath and double the pleasure.

Clean Your Apartment. I know - not much of a way to spend a snow day, except for the feeling you get when you are done (just think: clean sheets!). A word to the wise, though: You’ll have to move fast - everyone else is probably snowed in, too, which means the common washers and dryers may fill up fast.

Work. While it may be a snow day, you may still have work to do. Sorry.

And, even though it requires trudging outside, I highly recommend at least one snow angel each year. It does the soul some good.
