Apartment, Sweet Apartment

Posted on January 6, 2010 in: Lindsey | Living the life

My bags are unpacked, and the apartment is scrubbed from top to bottom. That’s right - I finally moved into my OWN place. No more couch for me.

Before the celebrating gets out of hand, I guess I should tell you that “moved” is a relative term. You see, my move over the holidays consisted of three storage bins, a suitcase and an air mattress - with a leak. (What did you expect from someone who was living on a couch?)

That means move number two will be coming in the next month - hopefully. Until then, I’m roughing it city-style.

Of course, being the small-town girl that I am, I spent a great deal of time camping, which, apparently, has prepared me for pretty much any situation. Actually, this “city camping” is a step up. I mean, hey, I’m not in a tent, and it’s nice and toasty in my apartment. After all, furniture is overrated.

With the apartment being vacant for so long, though, it had a bit of moaning and groaning to do. Which, I guess, I didn’t really need while I was trying to move and entertain guests all at once (did I mention that I had out-of-town friends stay with me for New Years?). The silver lining, though, is that the building engineer and I are now on a first name basis.

What happened? Well, my friends and I decided to pop a pizza into my oven to save money before our New Year’s endeavors. Within minutes, we started smelling gas. Hmmm….that’s just the gas oven warming up, right?

Wrong. The pilot light never came one, which meant gas was leaking into my apartment. Even after we shut the oven off, the gas continued. Not good.

Thank goodness for Mr. Resident Building Engineer. He managed to get the gas off, but couldn’t get the oven working. I’m guessing that I will be eating cereal for a while (remember, no microwave yet).

More trouble in paradise followed. After vigorously scrubbing all of my dishes and draining the sink, I heard what sounded like a faucet running UNDER my sink.

All of the gross water was now trickling into the cabinet below as I scrambled to find something, anything, to put under the leak. Those freshly-washed dishes worked quite well. Looks like my brand new sink isn’t quite in working order yet. Fantastic. Looks like I’ll be figuring out how to fix a sink if my super doesn’t get to it soon.

I guess I’ll be testing those newly negotiated lease terms very early. We’ll see how that goes, but, even with all the aches and pains, I still love my apartment and can’t wait to get completely settled. Home sweet home.
