The Roommate, a thriller movie with Leighton Meester and Minka Kelly, will be released in 2010. Entertainment Weekly reports that the film will follow the story of a college freshman (Meester) who develops an unhealthy fascination with her roommate (Kelly). Things get crazy.
Sounds like Leighton Meester would not win WilliamPaid’s Roommate of the Week Award. Minka Kelly’s character may have been able to avoid the drama queen had she used a roommate compatability quiz to screen her new roommate and a roommate agreement to set expectations upfront.
When it comes to real world roommate relationships, murder is not an option. Good roommate relationships begin with good communication.
Living with the wrong roommate can be living hell. If you are fortunate enough to be able to choose your roommate—not all folks are—look for people who are accountable, responsible, flexible, willing to work through problems, and supportive. And after you select that roommate, remember that positive roommate experiences require proactive, ongoing communication. Express expectations upfront. Discuss potential areas of conflict early—like rent or utility bill payments, chore responsibilities, even room temperature—and set mutually acceptable standards.
