The Advantages of Living with Roommates

Posted on October 14, 2010 in: Roommate Relationships

Happy Roommates

We all, at some point or another, find ourselves searching for a fellow renter to split the rent with, even though most of us would prefer a place on our own. And, while many may have horrific story after horrific story of roommate nightmares, there are a few advantages to living with a roommate that can make life a little more enjoyable. How many of these following five traits of roommate life do you enjoy with your roommate?

  • They serve as a good detox from tough days. Without a roommate around to talk to when you get home, the days can get pretty long and monotonous. After all, sans roommate, who would be there to gossip about the latest drama on Gossip Girl or to comment on that huge blunder in the Texas game?
  • They can help split the burden of chores. No one likes to do the dishes, clean bathrooms or straighten up all the time, so it’s great to have someone to share those chores with, even if they may contribute to them a little more.
  • They can split the cost of big investments. When moving into a new place alone, investing in furniture, kitchenware, etc., can be very pricy. Splitting these one time costs with a roommate can help make a move affordable and even a little enjoyable. And, it’s easy to split these essentials when you part ways later on.
  • They can be great motivators. We’ve had those nights, when you just can’t get motivated to crawl off the couch. (Who would want to miss that all night “Keeping up with the Kardashians” marathon or Monday Night Football?) Roommates can be a great source of motivation in times like these by helping you stick to plans you’ve made. After all, what excuse do you have for skipping the gym when you and your roommate planned to do it together and they are heading out the door?
  • They can help ease the toll of bills. One of the biggest reasons most people move in with roommates is to help offset the many bills and costs of an apartment. This financial aid can make a big difference in not only the type of apartment you get, but also in the location you find it. Plus, splitting rent costs puts an extra smile on everyone’s face at the end of the month.

Yes, sharing with roommates can be a headache, but focusing on these five benefits and the many others that your roommate brought with him or her when they moved in can be just the medicine you need to make this living arrangement a successful one. What traits and benefits do you love about your roommate?
