Earlier this month, we issued the WilliamPaid Challenge, urging all recent and not-so-recent graduates to tighten their belts a bit to pay back their student loans faster. Katya, a 23-year-old who graduated with more than $26,000 of student loans, agreed to sign-on to the Challenge for 90 days.
Just a week into it, we thought we’d see how Katya is doing. After all, just like a diet, the first few days are the easiest. Or are they the hardest?
According to Katya’s Twitter entries at #WilliamPaidChallenge, Katya had accepted the Challenge head on.
She started with the low hanging fruit - coffee. After all, isn’t coffee coffee? In Katya’s words, “Coffee brewed in store: $1.91. The exact same coffee brewed at home: $0.40. Why didn’t I think of this earlier?”
And, Katya found an added benefit of not buying coffee when she is out and about. “Since I’m not at Dunkin’ Donuts to buy coffee, I’m also not tempted to buy other snacks - also good for my wallet!”
If Katya brews her own coffee instead of buying one coffee along with a snack ($1.50) each day, she saves more than $20 a week. That’s more than $1,000 a year. Not bad, huh?
Of course, coffee is just one area in which you can save money. Try our Simple Savings Calculator to see where else you can save money.
