More young people are staying away from credit cards these days, according to a new analysis from FICO, creator of the FICO credit score.

Since 2011, Experian has included rent payments in consumers' credit histories. But it isn't automatic. If you want your rent payments to be included, you need to be proactive and opt in.

Missing a payment by 30 days has a greater impact on your credit score if you are a recent graduate and don't have much credit established yet, said Jeff Golding, CEO of WilliamPaid.

Chicago-based WilliamPaid is a payment processing company that makes automatic rent payments for renters. The company partnered with Experian in March to let users add their rent history to their credit reports to build credit.
