Apartment Maintenance: DIY Fixes

Anthony October 8, 2012 Renter Resources No Comments

Having been a renter for five years, I’ve dealt with my fair share of maintenance issues. From changing a light bulb to unclogging a sink, I’ve done it. There are some issues, such as when your ceiling caves in, that require outside help. But here are some tips for some easy, DIY fixes without calling your landlord.

1. Always have tools on hand

In order to fix anything in your apartment, you’re going to need the necessary hardware. At my apartment, I have these basic tools:

  • A screwdriver (Phillip’s head and flathead),
  • A hammer
  • A pair of heavy-duty scissors
  • Pliers

I’ve never had a need for anything else and these are definitely the essentials, but it doesn’t hurt to have a full toolbox. In addition to the tools, make sure you have these on hand:

  • Screws and nails in a variety of different sizes
  • Batteries
  • Extra light bulbs
  • Duct Tape
  • Measuring Tape
  • Ladder or stepstool
  • Plunger

2. Cover Holes in the Wall

Major damage such as water damage holes from a leak fall under the landlord’s maintenance requirement but if you make a small hole hanging a picture or accidentally ding the wall moving your couch, you can easily fix the hole yourself. Just buy spackle and a putty knife and spackle the wall to cover the hole. Paint over the spackle with paint to match the rest of the wall and it will look brand new.

3. Know what to do when your lights go out

Ever blown a fuse before? When you move into your apartment, have your landlord show you where the fuse box is for your apartment. It is most likely in the basement or a common area of the apartment building. Have them show you what to do when there is an outage so that you know and don’t have to unnecessarily call your landlord or building repairman. Keep extra light bulbs and the necessary tools to change them, such as a ladder to reach high light fixtures and a screwdriver to unscrew any wall sconces.

4. Know when you need help

Sometimes you’re doing more damage by trying to fix something yourself. As a renter, you’re covered for a variety of maintenance issues. Document anything that needs repair and contact your landlord. You’re probably not equipped to fix your ceiling when it caves in from a leak or if your stove, refrigerator or other appliances are broken. Call your landlord and they will have a repairman come out. Don’t spend your time or money when you don’t have to.
