Decorating Your Apartment for the Holidays

Anthony December 5, 2012 Renter Resources No Comments

Decorating your apartment for the holidays can be a challenge. As much as we’d all like our apartment to look like it jumped off the pages of the Holiday Edition of the Pottery Barn catalog, our space and budget don’t necessarily allow for that. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get festive!

Here are some great ways to bring holiday cheer to your apartment without compromising space or draining your bank account!

Decorate the doors or mirrors

Everyone has a door! Doors are an easy space to decorate with a wreath or festive holiday sign. Your landlord might not be too happy if you put a huge hole in your door with a nail, so get an over-the-door hanger, Command strip hook, or even colorful ribbon to hang a wreath. You can even hang a wreath over a mirror to add some festivity to the inside of your apartment!

String Lights

Strands of Christmas lights don’t take up much room and can serve as the focal point for your holiday decorating. If you live in an apartment building you probably can’t afford to decorate the outside with Christmas lights Clark Griswold-style but you can decorate the interior of your apartment with as many lights as you can string up. Surround your windows, ceiling, fireplace, or any open wall space with hundreds of twinkling lights to create a festive atmosphere. Be careful of leaving them on for too long and starting a fire or running up your electricity bill!

String Holiday Cards

Create a display of the greeting cards you receive by hanging wire or string across a doorway and empty wall space. Holiday cards are a touching reminder of friends and family and not only will this display remind you of the warmth and love to be found during the holiday season, it can also provide an easy and affordable way to brighten up your walls!

Find space for a Christmas tree

Make room for a Christmas tree, a festive holiday essential. Try rearranging furniture for the season in order to create a space for your tree. There are also small trees that are available that take up less space and are more affordable. Tabletop trees also are a good option. And don’t skimp on the ornaments! Just because a tree is small doesn’t mean it has to be sparsely decorated. Get creative and make your own decorations so you don’t have to go out and buy them!

Fill your shelves

Even you don’t have room for a tree in your apartment, it doesn’t mean you still can’t make it look festive. Take advantage of empty space on your bookcases and other shelves. Add Christmas figurines, mini wreaths, ribbon, candles, small plants, and other holiday décor.

Get Creative!

This Christmas, my friend decided to skip setting up a traditional Christmas tree in her apartment and made a Christmas tree out of books by stringing them with lights. Or try making a wreath out of old pictures of friends and family or magazine clippings. Get creative and spread holiday cheer around your apartment in a way that’s unique and special to you without breaking the bank!
