5 Ways to Save Money with Your College Roommate

Posted on August 17, 2010 in: Roommate Relationships

WilliamPaid thanks University Language Services for sharing today’s blog.

When you leave your parents house to move into your new college digs, many things will be new and surprising to you. At the top of that list will be the realization that you now have a bucket load of responsibility. Cleaning your bathroom, restocking your fridge and, most importantly, keeping track of your finances will suddenly be your own responsibility.

But how do you save money in college? Your roommate can help!

University Language Services has compiled a list of cost-cutting tips for you and your roommate.

  • Brew Your Coffee at Home It might be time to rethink that extra-large triple-shot latte you buy every morning. If your roommate is a coffee drinker, split the cost of a coffee machine and some home brew coffee.
  • Recycle Your Cans Not only is recycling good for the earth, it’s also pretty good on your wallet. Have a recycling bin in your dorm room or apartment and make sure both you and your roommate use it! In many states, you can get money for depositing your cans to your local recycling center or grocery store (such as Walmart).
  • Buy in Bulk. Buying things like canned food, paper towels and soap in bulk and splitting the cost with your roommate can save you cash in the long run.
  • Collaborate. Get in touch with your roommate before you move in together. Decide on who brings what - you’ll save money by not having to get two of anything. Who needs two microwaves, televisions and wastebaskets?
  • Swap Clothes. If you’re lucky, you might just end up living with a roommate that you get along with and who wears the same size clothing as you. Share! Instead of having to buy new clothes, you can wear each others’. But don’t forget to get permission from your roommate first!

Don’t forget - every penny counts! So when you’re trying to save money in college, you have to get creative.
