Recently, I had the opportunity to go to my first official Cubs game at Wrigley Field. Even for a sports enthusiast like myself, Wrigley Field is an experience like no other.
The atmosphere of the stadium was different from my other major league stadium experiences. Whether it was the old-time feeling in the stands, the neighborhood locales or the rousing fans, Wrigley is a must-see even if you could care less about baseball. In particular, I enjoyed the 7th inning stretch rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” - I could almost hear Harry Caray singing along.
After the game, I was inspired to check out the rest of Chicago’s happening sports teams. Chicago is known for their talent and loyal fan bases whether it be the Bulls, White Sox, the Cubs or the Blackhawks. In fact, most venues and locales in the Chicagoland area are identified by which teams they follow and which fans frequent their establishments. Be sure not to step into the wrong one on game day - wearing the other team’s jersey.
While I will always be first and foremost a Cleveland sports fan (Go Indians!), I have found a spot in my heart for a few Chicago teams as well.
It’s obvious that I will be following the Cubs this baseball season, and how could I not living only a few blocks from Wrigley Field and after one already amazing experience there. I always tend to root for the underdogs anyway, and the Cubs have been known for their struggles. This year is proving no different with a record of 21 wins and 24 losses. That said, the White Sox are a short el ride away, so I’ll need to check them out as well.
As for football, rooting for the Bears wouldn’t be much different from the Browns - both teams seem to perform about the same. So, unless they are playing each other, my vote goes to… Da Bears.
When it comes to winter sports, I’m more of a basketball follower and will probably choose a Bulls game over the Blackhawks, but I will be rooting for both when the weather turns cold again this fall. (Who knows, maybe a certain Cavs player will be making his way west sometime soon.) Also, good luck to the Blackhawks as they enter the finals - hopefully, the Stanley Cup will soon find a home in Chicago.
Throughout each sports season, I plan to see the teams play and hopefully win on their home turf. After all, a good game is always made even better when enjoying it in person. But when I’m not at the arenas and stadiums, you can find me at the locales flying my new colors high. Gooo Cubbies!!
