5 Money-Saving Apartment Tricks

Posted on October 11, 2010 in: Money Mondays

Many renters are strapped for cash nowadays and could use a little extra cash to help cover those pesky apartment expenses. Here are five tricks to try that could find you the extra green you were looking for.

  • Turn off the lights and appliances. Simply by turning off lights and electronics that you are not using, you can save a hefty amount on your electricity bill each month by making your apartment more energy efficient. Try it for one month and compare the subsequent bill with the one before it. You may be very surprised by the results.
  • Layer up (or down). Dress for the season and give the AC and heat a break. After all, what’s the point of having those 12 extra blankets take up valuable closet space if you’re not going to use them?
  • Clean smarter. Just by doing a simple clean after a spill, you can actually save money. Just think about how much cleaning solution (and time) you can save by taking care of stains and other common cleaning nightmares right away before they turn into an hour long scrubbing project. You could actually add months to your cleaning products use cutting down on your cleaning costs by almost half.
  • Plan ahead and make lists. Whether you are trying to furnish and decorate your apartment or are just heading to the store for the essentials, plan what you want to buy and write it down with the projected cost before you go to the store. Then, all you have to do is stick to that list and you’ll save a fortune in unnecessary expenses.
  • Verify your bills with WilliamPaid. Unfortunately, there is no good way to avoid those pesky apartment bills each month, so you might as well get some credit for all of payments you’ve made. When you verify these bills, you can begin building your credit, which can end up saving you thousands of dollars in interest rates for future loans and in insurance premiums among other reduced life expenses. We don’t know about you, but an extra few thousand dollars in your pocket sounds pretty good.

Saving money is at the top of everyone’s to-do list, and if you know where to look, it can be easy to find the extra cash you’ve been searching for. What tricks to do you use to keep your apartment costs down?
