If you are in an apartment built before 1990, you may have one chief complaint: Your closet is too small. Closet organizers cost an arm and a leg and, as a non-permanent rental, you really don’t want to invest in fixtures you can’t take with you.
Here are a few ideas to maximize and organize your apartment closet for next-to-nothing (or even nothing).
- Boxes, Boxes Boxes. They definitely are not glamorous, but they are cheap, and no one is going to see them anyway. Boxes stacked vertically can create shelves for sweaters, shoes and pants. Make sure they are sturdy (banker’s boxes work great) and clean and then, after you stack them, use heavy-duty tape to fuse the boxes together. Voila.
- Rearrange. Move an extra dresser or bookshelf (or even a dining table) into your closet. If you don’t have one, a yard sale or flea market may yield results on the cheap. Just make sure you measure first.
- DIY. Hit your local hardware store. You can pick up boards and cinder blocks to create any combination of lengths and heights.
- Cheap Closet Accessories. Consider stores like Walmart and Target. Forego the fancy baskets and linen-looking stackables. Go for function, not fashion.
- Clean it out. The cheapest way to maximize the space in your closet is to clean it out. If you haven’t worn it in two years, give it away. Painful, but it works.
With a little ingenuity, you can have the closet of your dreams (or at least live with what you have) without losing your shirt.
