Choosing a Pet to Match Life as a Renter

Posted on September 8, 2010 in: Lindsey | Living the life

As I was enjoying some time in my apartment this past weekend, I began thinking just how quiet it is (when my neighbors upstairs aren’t home that is) and how much I miss my family’s dog, Riley.

Like many renters, I have been struggling with the decision of getting a pet, but I always end up deciding to wait until I can afford one more easily. (Let’s face it; a girl who is currently eating as much Ramen as I am probably shouldn’t be buying pets.) After all, in most rented Chicago apartments pets pay rent, too.

Hopefully, within the next year or two, a pet will fit better into my budget, but what kind of pet should I get? Here are my top 3 favorites. Which would you choose?

Dog. A dog is definitely my top choice and seems to be a favorite for many Chicago renters. However, they tend to fall on the more expensive side and require much more care than other animals, especially when they are puppies. Plus, forget the purse ornaments, I want a German Shepherd or Husky, and those aren’t exactly apartment dogs.

Cat. They are fuzzy, sweet and puurrfect to cuddle with. A cat would be a great apartment pet, as they don’t need as much room as a dog and are usually quieter. However, like many other animals, cats do better with a companion, and multiple cats equal double the mess (and expense) - not to mention one smelly litter box.

Bunny. A little unconventional maybe, but a bunny would make a great apartment companion as they are super quiet, and when raised from babies, they can be just as cuddly as other pets. Also, they can be trained to use a litter box, and are much easier to clean up after. The only downfall is that it could be difficult to find an apartment complex that allows nontraditional pets.

It’s so hard to choose, so it’s probably a good thing I have plenty of time to ponder whether I want Fido, Sassy or Thumper. Until then, I think I will volunteer at PAWS or the Trio Animal Foundation and spend some time with the shelter animals. Hopefully, I don’t end up bringing one home… yet. Which animal would be your ideal pet?
