This week has been one of pride in Chicago. It began with a weekend of Pride in Boystown, continued with the pride of Chicago restaurants at Taste of Chicago and will end with pride in America as Chicagoans gather together to celebrate Independance Day.
East Lakeview showed its pride this past weekend with LGBT celebrations flooding the streets. The Pride Parade was the grand finale to the three day festival filled with friends, fun and raising awareness.
I had the privilege of traveling the half-a-block distance from my apartment to partake in the parade festivities that had taken over my neighborhood on Sunday. It was my first Pride parade, and it did not disappoint. It seemed that all of Chicago had taken to the streets to enjoy the parade and show their support. As one of an estimated 500,000 people at the parade, the movement has come a long way.
If food is more your thing, this weekend didn’t disappoint as the annual pilgrimage to everything food, Taste of Chicago, opened. Running through July 4, fest-goers can nosh on the more than 200 food items that are available. At $8 per 12-ticket strip, visitors can sample food and drinks from all over the world. It’s a great way to try different restaurants and ethnic food. And, I’m told you can find some great budget items down there - so I’m going to see how far my tickets can go.
Food aside, the Taste also gives you three stages providing a diverse selection of music and entertainment including larger names like Trey Songz and Rob Thomas. As always, for Indpendence Day, Taste of Chicago goes patriotic with the best view of the grand fireworks display at Navy Pier.
Great food, great people and great experiences have created one of the most memorable and best weeks yet during my time in Chicago, and I can’t wait to watch this action-packed Chicago summer continue to unfold. What are you most looking forward to this summer?
