Getting to Know Your New Neighborhood

Posted on May 13, 2010 in: Renter Resources

So, you just signed the lease on a brand new apartment - your new home sweet home. Only one problem, you moved to a brand new town or neighborhood and know no one and little about the area. Now what?

Well, it’s time to get yourself out and discover this brand new neighborhood. Hopefully, you did a little research before moving to make sure you and your brand new surroundings are a good fit. The next step is to simply leave the apartment and start discovering.

Here are our top 3 favorite ways to uncover the hidden secrets of your brand new spot.

Go Walking. Simply by leaving your apartment and walking around your new neighborhood, you can find nearby hot spots such as restaurants, locales and parks as well as your basic essentials such as the nearest grocery store and dry cleaning.

Keep in mind that the closest option might not be your best. For example, of course, there is a coffee shop around the corner. But, the coffee shop down the block and around the corner has free Wi-fi. So, exploring beyond the nearest and dearest is key. Likewise for restaurants.

Go Out. Whether you are alone or live with someone, get yourself out and experience the local nightlife. Not only will you get a feel for your new neighborhood, but you may make some great new friends who live nearby. Yes, it can be scary, but, by staying local, it’s actually not that big of an effort. If all else fails, you’re a stone’s throw from home.

Get Active. Joining activities is a great way to get the most out of your neighborhood. Join a nearby gym, a local sports team or running group or find another group acquainted with your interests and watch your new, once foreign surroundings, quickly transform into a home.

Follow these simple tips and you will be at home in your new locale in no time. In the words of the famous brand, Nike, get yourself out there and “Just do it!” The sooner you do the gladder you’ll be. What tips do you have for exploring a new neighborhood?
