Traveling on a Renter’s Budget

Posted on April 28, 2010 in: Lindsey | Living the life

budget travel

With summer quickly approaching, I, like many others, will be leaving my apartment behind and heading on a few trips. Only one problem - said trips are going to leave my budget a little stretched.

So, the big dilemma is how am I going to be able to afford them and still pay my rent? (At least, thanks to WilliamPaid, I won’t have to worry about getting the payments to my landlord while I’m gone.)

Lucky for me, there are some great articles like the “Budget Guide to Road Trips” and “50 Budget Travel Tips” to make such budget stretching possible. I’ve even found a few great ways to help you save, too.

My top 5 budget tips for summer travel:

  • Bring snacks. Food can be one of the biggest expenses while traveling, so stopping at a grocery store and stocking up on drinks, snacks and maybe even a meal or two could save you a few hundred dollars.
  • Pack light. No, you do not need three different outfits for each day, and odds are that you will be buying things along the way. Plus, if you’re flying you will be paying a hefty amount to bring that extra luggage. Save yourself some green (and some backaches) and lighten the load.
  • Find lodging discounts. Using sites like Priceline or Expedia to find great deals on nice hotels can save you up to half on the same reservations(use WilliamPaid’s Shopping Center and get some of that hard-earned cash back, too). If you’re looking to find lodging along the way, avoid the all-inclusive spots and stick to motels and cheaper hotels, as you’ll really only be using the shower and bed anyway.
  • Find cheap or free events. Having fun doesn’t have to be expensive. Just bring your own tunes for travel entertainment and, when you arrive, head to a nearby hotel (restaurants are also great for this) to scope out attractions and ongoing events nearby or just ask the locals. You may stumble upon a hidden gem.
  • Bring some friends. No trip is complete without a few great people to share it with. Plus, not only will you have much more fun with a few of your favorite people, but you will also save money on travel and lodging expenses.

With these tips, maximizing your budget on your next trip will be a breeze. Just be sure to give yourself a little breathing room in that budget. You never know what could happen - but isn’t that part of the fun? What tips do you have for budget travelers?
