4 Design Ideas for a Small Apartment

So you just moved into your first studio apartment. Now what? It may seem bigger than the dorm room you just moved out of but those four walls can quickly start to feel confining. Decorating a small apartment can be a challenge but using some of these simple design tips you can maximize the space in your small apartment and make it a more comfortable living space.

1. Don’t clutter. Decorating a small apartment is easier when you use modern and simple furniture and designs. Too much furniture will make the space feel smaller than it is and will distract from the space that is available. Keep it simple and buy furniture that makes best use of the space available. Get a couch and coffee table that fit the room. Make the living room stand out with a colorful accent rug, like in the picture below.

2. Use room dividers. The best way to make your small apartment seem larger is to use dividers. This will create the illusion that the apartment has more rooms that it actually does. Use a large bookshelf to separate the space between your living room and your bedroom. It will make it seem as though your apartment has separate living spaces and will keep guests from using your bed as a couch!

3. Keep it light. Light and neutral colors will give the illusion of space and airiness, so paint your walls whites, beige’s, or muted pastels. Painting the walls a dark color will make the walls stand out which is not good when you are working with small spaces. Light walls will trick the eye and make it seem as if the walls disappeared.
Tip: Use mirrors. The reflection will enlarge the space. Put a long mirror at the end of your hallway to give the illusion of length.

These light walls make the space feel roomier and homier

4. Be creative with storage. Keeping everything in its place is key when living in a small apartment. Take advantage of space under your bed and under cabinets. An easy storage idea is to hang things on the inside of cabinet doors, like in the medicine cabinet below.
And don’t forget about the space on top of your cabinets, refrigerator, or bookshelves. These are often great places to store things or to place decorative items.
Tip: Shelving over doorways is a great way to maximize space.
