With many friends recently graduating and renting apartments on their own for the first time, I got to thinking about what was going through my head at my own graduation this time last year. At the top of that list were feelings of excitment, sadness and fear - excitement for the future, sadness as I left the past behind and fear of the unknown.
Speaking with a few recent grads this year, it was clear that they were feeling the same way. Many of them wondered what’s next, where do I go from here and why can’t I just stay in college forever?
Don’t worry grads, while this transition may seem scary, there are many things to be excited about and to look forward to as you take your first steps out on your own.
You get to decide. No longer is there anyone telling you what to do. From this point on, you are in charge and only you can influence your future. Scary? Maybe, but think of the thrill you’ll have knowing that the next steps you take, you accomplished yourself.
You can have a place of your own. While you may decide to still live with roommates, you no longer have to. Just imagine the freedom that comes with an apartment of your own. You can come and go as you please, keep your apartment as clean (or dirty) as you like and be as crazy as you want without the fear of someone catching you. (After all, who doesn’t love the occasional rock session with hairbrush in hand? Or maybe even a little air guitar - no one ever has to know.)
You don’t have to depend on your parents. They are probably more than happy to help you through your transition, but you will find yourself depending on the parental units less and less as you navigate your way. That feeling of independence you gain from taking care of your own affairs is irreplaceable, and at the risk of sounding cliche, your parents will be so proud. This doesn’t mean they still won’t want to help, though. They are still your parents after all, and there is nothing wrong with letting them once in a while.
Yes, you may be in for a bit of hard work, but, hey, you just survived 4-5 years of college (or maybe even more). What’s a little hard work, right? So, congrats Class of 2010 and good luck!
I can’t believe your site would be so mind blowing and epistemlogically significant nevertheless I will alert my other friends , relatives, and significant others thank you very much and never let your self-esteem be lowered because you are a great individual!!
