Decorating Your Apartment for the Holidays

Posted on December 9, 2010 in: Renter Resources

The holidays are a time of joy and selflessness - and great holiday decorations. To celebrate the season, apartment dwellers will be buying up lights and mini trees to make their apartments festive for out of town visitors. While those decorations may be cute (Who wouldn’t want this singing and dancing Santa?), they can also be quite expensive. Here are a few ways to celebrate the season without the extra green from your pocket.

  • Do-It-Yourself Decor: The surest way to save on decorations is to make them yourself. You could create your own ornaments or even your own alternative tree. All you get are a few items from craft stores, which will cost you only a few bucks, and then use your imagination. Here are a few do-it-yourself decoration ideas.
  • Borrow from Friends and Family: After years of celebrating the holidays in their own homes, your friends and family probably have tons of extra decorations that they’d be happy to part with to help you start your own holiday collection. Just ask and you will receive (most likely much more than you need).
  • Buy Used Decorations: Many thrift stores and online sites like eBay will be displaying used holiday decorations. Often these decorations have been barely used and are still in great shape, and the best part is that you will get them for half of their original retail price.
  • Wait for After-Holiday Sales: Of course, this tip doesn’t help you for this holiday season, but you will be set for next year. After the holidays, all decorations are sold with deep discounts that are sometimes over 70% off the original retail price saving you cash for next year, too. That’s a deal worth waiting for!

This time of year is expensive enough without using extra green on an expensive wreath or holiday figurines. Get crafty this year and use what you already have to create a new holiday look. You’ll be more proud of you decorations and of the extra cash left in your holiday budget.
