Although these tight economic times have been difficult on most of us, there is at least one upside - nearly everything is now negotiable. It’s time to put the old adage, “You don’t get what you don’t ask for” to work for you. So, renters, let’s start asking. Here are a few places to start:
- Rent. But, you say, your lease isn’t up for renewal yet, so why would your landlord negotiate your lease? If you like your apartment and have been a good tenant (i.e., pay your rent on time), try this. Tell your landlord that you would consider extending your lease right now if you receive a rent reduction starting now. Your landlord will have to look at this as a ‘bird in the hand’ and will likely come back to you with a reduced rent. But, don’t take the first offer - tell your landlord that you will think about it. Think about it for a couple days, and then go back to your landlord with a slightly lower figure.
- Cable/Satellite TV Services. Love having cable in your apartment, but think you are paying way too much? Take advantage of all the referral deals out there - you know, refer a friend to the service and get $100. Get it for yourself. Just call up the customer service department, and let them know that you are thinking of switching. You’ll be amazed at how many offers get thrown your way. Again, don’t take the first offer - there’s probably more out there. And, consider a bundled package for the best deal.
- Satellite Radio. Same story. We know someone who called to “cancel” and got their rate to drop from $14.95 a month to $4.95 a month - with no commitment. Have at it.
- Cell Phone. It sounds like a broken record, but, if you are outside of your commitment period, you are the holy grail to the phone companies because you can go anywhere (unless you have an i-Phone (sorry, Apple lovers). Start shopping. If you have a phone you already like, don’t go for the “free phone” offers - lower your monthly rate instead and, particularly if you don’t go for the free or reduced phone offer, get a lower termination penalty (you can become a free agent sooner!). Even if you are mid-contract, you might still be able to get a better deal. Just ask. Of course, there are other things to think about besides cost, so make sure you are getting the best package for you. (One more thing: if you still have a land line in your apartment, ask yourself if you really need it.)
- Gym Memberships. Jealous of all of those New Year’s resolution offers that are out there but still want to stay at your current health club? Tell them you want the deal, too. They know that you have plenty of options and, unless you tell them, they don’t know that you’d prefer to stay. Arm yourself with an understanding of how they make money. Because their cost of acquiring a customer is more than keeping you at a lower cost, they will probably cut you a deal.
This is just the tip of the iceberg. Look at your monthly or regular payments - there are probably additional areas that you can save. The most important tip of all, though, is to be nice. As they say, you get more flies with honey.
