A Renter’s Guide to Halloween in Chicago: Budget Friendly Costumes

Posted on October 20, 2010 in: Lindsey | Living the life

Halloween is quickly approaching and many renters have been flooding the many Halloween stores that have invaded every rental space in the city. But what should you do if your budget doesn’t allow for that amazing costume in the store window? Create your own. Here are a few popular costumes this year that you are probably in your closet already.

Ladies:

  • Lady Gaga: There will definitely be many different versions of Gaga running around this Halloween. Create your own Lady Gaga look with these simple wardrobe basics. For the black sequin dress outfit, pull out last year’s pattern tights, a pair of ankle boots (the crazier the better) and that little black club dress you love. Then grab some poster board and cut it into one large triangle and one half-circle (You will need to cut the half-circle in half again.). Paint the triangle silver and the circle pieces black. Add sequins and glitter and attach the pieces to your dress accordingly using fabric tape. To finish the look draw a lightening bolt around one eye or create a matching mask.
  • Snooki from Jersey Shore: Snooki costumes are also “all the rage” from coast to coast. To recreate this look for Halloween, all you need is a tiny dress (animal print preferable), a pair of flashy four-inch heels and a Bumpit. Finish the look by applying makeup liberally, straightening your hair and creating the biggest poof possible.

Guys:

  • Mad Man Don Draper: The Draper costume is predicted to be popular again this year, and is easily created. All you need is a suit (If you don’t have one, hit the thrift stores for a cheap version.), a vintage tie, a handkerchief for the suit pocket and Brylcreem hair gel. Style your hair accordingly, carry around a brandy glass and watch the ladies “swoon”.
  • Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino or DJ Pauly D from Jersey Shore: The ladies aren’t the only ones going for the Jersey Shore look this Halloween. Recreate your own Jersey look as Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino or DJ Pauly D with a little self-tanner, lots of hair gel, a super-tight tank top, a religious chain and white sneakers. Get a group together, and go as the entire cast for the full effect.

This is a very small list of the many costumes easily created from your closet. Which other popular costumes are you recreating the budget friendly way this Halloween?
