As much as we’d like to believe that renting an apartment or home always goes smoothly, unfortunately, the hard truth is that sometimes we run into problems. Whether it’s leaky plumbing, a messy roommate, or a disagreeable landlord, we all have our share of disastrous rental stories.
However, it’s not all horror stories. Sometimes, what we experience can only be described as strange, or inexplicable. Here are a few of the strangest rental stories.
Haunted Apartment
From the Experience Project: In the late 80’s I lived in a small apartment. Since the first week I moved in there would loud knocking at the door in the early morning hours. I would get up to answer and no one would be there! One night when my brother stayed at my apartment he answered the door to find no one was there and there were no footprints in the newly fallen snow! Things would always go missing, and some would come back, and some not. One night I was sleeping soundly when when all of a sudden it was like I was dropped from a great height. I came crashing down on the bed with such force I literally bounced on that bed at least three times! As my eyes traveled up, I noticed the door knob turning very slowly back and forth silently. Soon after that I moved.
Weight-Gain Policy
From the Huffington Post: An apartment complex in Osaka, Japan adjusts the cost of rent based on the tenants’ weight. When a tenant loses 2.2 pounds, $10 gets taken off their monthly rent. If they gain weight, the rent increases. Interestingly enough, 53% of respondents to a poll said they would live in a place with these stipulations in place.
The Bird-Man
From Jezebel: I had a roommate who was totally awesome. I loved her dearly then and love her now. She had a boyfriend who I actually really liked, too. Then only thing I disliked was his propensity to climb on top of the refrigerator and perch there, bird-like, in the middle of the night. For reals. One night, a mutual friend of ours was staying over for the weekend. She was in my room and got up to walk thru the kitchen, down the hall to the bathroom. She came running back in, terrified and claiming that “a man had broken in and was hiding on top of the fridge”. I had to explain that was just “Bob” and that he just liked to hang out up there…
Secret Dungeon in Studio Apartment
From Metro.Co.UK: A day after moving into his new studio apartment, a man decided to investigate a hatch in the floor…and discovered a secret dungeon. The dungeon is an old English monastery conversion, and has about thirty apartments. “Got a great deal on the rent, and didn’t realise how much value I got until I moved in and found an area worthy of any movie-grade exploration,” the tenant says.
