When you’re living in an apartment, it’s easy to fall into the take-out and movie night lifestyle, or start grabbing fast food on the go. If you’re one of the lucky ones, you have an exercise room in the building but if not, how do you stay fit? Those gym fees add up, and exercise equipment (if you have the room for it) may disrupt your neighbors.
Here are a few things you can do to stay healthy while living the apartment life :
Activities:
- Yoga: A great exercise that keeps you limber, yoga can also help you build muscles and stay calm. As an added bonus, it is virtually silent, so you won’t disrupt the neighbors, and you don’t need too much space to lay out a yoga mat.
- Pilates: A relative of yoga, Pilates takes about the same amount of space, and helps you build your core to stay strong. There are tons of exercise tapes and programs online to help you build a great yoga or Pilates workout.
- Biking: Not only does biking help you get around the city, but it’s also great exercise, and you’ll get to take in the sights around your neighborhood.
- Running: This may be the cheapest way to get your exercise while still saving money. Running costs virtually nothing and is a great workout for the whole body. If you live near a park or lakefront, this can be especially enjoyable.
- Sports: Join an intramural or community league. Not only will you be able to stay in shape and have fun, but it’ll also help you socialize and meet others in the area.
Equipment:
- Stability ball: These will help you build your core muscles, quietly. They’re rather large, but just have them double as a piece of furniture and you’re good to go!
- Resistance band: They store easily, and help keep your muscles strong. There are also a variety of different ways they can be used, based on the results you want to achieve.
- Free weights: Granted, you may not be able to get gym-quality weights, but it’s easy to keep some smaller sizes on hand and do some bicep curls while you’re watching TV.
