Go Green

Earth day is coming up, and that means we’re thinking more about how to conserve energy and “go green” in our everyday lives. If you own a place, you can put in solar panels, switch your appliances to energy efficient models, or install a low-flow toilet. However, there are hundreds of everyday ways to make a difference at home, whether you’re a renter or a property owner.

Switch your lightbulbs to CFLs.

Swapping out your lightbulbs for energy efficient bulbs can save you $40 a bulb over the lifetime of the bulb compared to an incandescent light. That adds up to a lot of savings, and helps conserve energy.

Minimize your electric use.

Turn off lights when you leave the room, utilize natural light as much as possible, unplug your chargers when you’re not using them, and turn off your computer at night.

Pay your bills online.

Eliminate paper waste by converting your bills to online payments. With us, make online rent payments and get the added bonus of building credit history. That helps you do something for both yourself and the planet. Plus, you can automate your payments, making your life a little easier.

To save more paper, remove yourself from junk email lists.

Buy earth-friendly household items.

Eliminate the use of plastic water bottles by using a reusable bottle, which will save hundreds of bottles over the course of its lifetime. Stop buying toxic household cleaners, and purchase more eco-friendly options, or make your own.

Save water.

Conserve water by turning off the spout when brushing your teeth, when shampooing and conditioning in the shower, and only using the washing machine when you have a full load.

Plant an herb garden.

Even if you don’t have room for a full-blown garden in your unit, there are still ways you can grow your own herbs and vegetables. A DIY mason jar wall garden doesn’t take up much space, and will still allow you to flex your green thumb.

Wherever you live, it’s easy to make a conscious effort to “go green” and be a little more earth friendly in your everyday life. Encouraging your landlord to make updates to your unit, such as energy efficient appliances, can also help you save money and be more earth-conscious.
