Moving out of your apartment is a full on hassle. Not only do you have to pack, lug and cram all your stuff into an expensive moving truck, but you have to do it on a tight schedule so the new tenants can move in. If only there was a way to get some free help, pay less for a truck rental and have some say about when you can move. Turns out there is — have a friend to take over your lease.
Here are four ways that having your friends move into your old apartment really pays off:
-
Flexible Move-Outs
When you don’t know the new tenants moving in, it’s not easy to coordinate with them or ask to stay an extra day in your apartment if you need it. If your friend is moving in, you can easily ask if they can wait a day to move in so you can get everything in order for your move. It may not always work out, but your friends are far more likely to accommodate that request than someone you don’t know.
-
Give Away or Sell Your Stuff
We all have old chairs or couches that we might want to upgrade when moving to a new place. If your friend is moving in, ask them if they’d want you to leave the couch (or if they want to buy it off you). This tactic is an awesome way to shed unwanted furniture without having to move it — and maybe get a bit of coin out of it. And it’s great for friends moving from other cities, who might not be bringing a lot with them. Now that’s a win-win.
-
Save on the Truck/Van
If you know when your friend will be arriving to unload their truck and move into your old place, see if you can share the moving van. Help them unload all their stuff and then have them help you load your belongings into the same truck. This little trick can save you both some time, energy and money. Not to mention it’s better for the environment (fewer emissions)!
-
Free Help
Last, but certainly not least, if your friend is moving in, it’s almost a no-brainer to coordinate so you can help each other move out (and in). After they help you clear your old apartment out, return the favor and help them lug their stuff in.
