Tips for Apartment Hunting on a College Grad’s Budget

If you’re a college senior, you’ve most likely already donned your cap and gown, been handed your diploma, and are officially a college graduate. Do you hear the real world calling your name? When I graduated college, it was a bittersweet mix of excitement and trepidation for what the future was to hold. There were so many decisions to make! One of the first ones was figuring out where to live. If moving back home with Mom and Dad isn’t an option (and it definitely wasn’t for me!), finding a place on your own is an often-daunting task, especially if you are moving to a new city for a job and are trying to stick to a budget. Hey, those loans aren’t going to pay for themselves!

Without further adieu, here are some tips for apartment hunting on a college grad’s budget:

1. Set a budget early- and stick to it.

Figure out how much you can afford, taking into account student loan payments, utilities, and other costs in your life. Once you figure out how much you can afford for monthly rent payments, stick to your budget. It’s easy to get excited about having your own place and being on your own, but saving money and sticking to your budget will benefit you in the long run.

2. Do your research and read the fine print

When searching for an apartment, it’s easy to get lost in the excitement of it all. While it is a fun and exciting experience, make sure you do your research so that a landlord or property company isn’t taking advantage of you. Read the fine print on your lease so you don’t miss important details. Make sure you know what you’re getting into before you sign anything!

3. Skip the Unnecessary Amenities

While it may be tempting to rent in a building with a gym or swimming pool, or to snag the luxurious top-floor pad with the beautiful view, sacrifices are essential for college living. It is unlikely, as a recent college grad, you can afford extravagant digs, so just make sure your place has the basic essentials-you don’t want an apartment with leaky ceilings and a toilet that doesn’t flush. Be certain that it is safe, functioning and affordable before considering spending any extra money on luxuries.

4. Get Roommates

Another great way to save money is to share rent with one or more roommates. However, living with others can be tricky, and you will want to choose roommates you will be compatible with. Make a list of desirable qualities for a roommate and make sure any potential roomie fits the description. To ensure you and your roommates rent payments are on time every month, look into paying your rent online.

Keep these tips in mind and happy hunting!
