Tips for Managing Chores with Roommates

Finding a roommate is one of the best ways to cut down on living expenses. Dividing the majority of bills in half is a win-win. Dividing chores, however, can be a little trickier. Before you begin unpacking those moving boxes, make sure you’ve screened well for a roommate and found a good match, eliminating some not-so-pleasant surprises. Cleanliness is a key factor in compatibility, and deciding how you will divide up the household chores should be one of the first things you do as roommates.

Even if your roommate is Ms. Clean, don’t assume she’ll enjoy cleaning up after you. Start out by organizing a chore schedule that will work for both of you. Here are some tips for peaceful roommate co-existence when managing chores:

  • Make a Chore List: Be thorough when listing all the household tasks that will need to be completed on a regular or semi-regular basis. Don’t forget things like running out to buy light bulbs or other items you’ll both use in the apartment.
  • Divide and/or Rotate: Does unloading the dishwasher equal cleaning the stove? When you take on a chore, it should be comparable to your roommate’s. Agree to trade off as needed.
  • Reassess: Revisit the chore schedule and division of labor shortly after you’ve moved in to see if it’s working for both of you. It’s likely that as you settle into a living routine, unanticipated chores will present themselves and you’ll each gravitate towards different tasks.
  • Communicate: If either of you is feeling frustrated when it comes to getting the household chores done, talk openly about it. This way, you’ll avoid misunderstandings.

Remember to keep the focus on the bigger picture: You’ve found a compatible roommate, you’re saving money and it’s a great arrangement. Don’t get too bogged down in the small stuff!
