5 Tips for Renters to Shop Smarter Online

Today is Cyber Monday (one of the biggest online shopping days of the year), and many renters are turning to their computers to finish up their gift lists for the holidays. However, even on the biggest online deal day of the year, budgets can be overextended with just the click of a mouse. Here are a few tips to help renters enjoy this shopping holiday while staying smart with their budgets.

  • Stick to the list. Like any other shopping venture, sticking to the list can mean the difference between a happy holiday season and a stress-filled one. If you’re not the type to make lists, you may want to make an exception for the sake of your budget. You will buy fewer gifts for less and get the satisfaction of tracking your progress as well.
  • Shop around. This tip is practiced by many deal shoppers both in stores and online, and is one of the most valuable tips a shopper can follow. For example, let’s say a renter wants to get that hot new GPS system as a gift. They found it for 50% off on the merchandiser’s website and decided to purchase. However, had they checked a few other sites before clicking buy, they would have found the same GPS for 60% off and free shipping and saved enough cash for an extra gift.
  • Compare online prices to in-store prices. Sometimes the prices in the stores can be different from the online deals, especially today. If possible, checking in-store prices before making an online purchase can ensure the best deal possible. Imagine making a purchase online and finding that the in store price actually added an additional 10% of savings, plus no shipping costs. Ouch!
  • Don’t forget shipping. Speaking of shipping costs, don’t forget that, while deals may seem better online, the additional costs of shipping the items has not yet been factored in. Yes, the convenience of not having to haul holiday plunder home is wonderful but not when it costs $10 or more per purchase in shipping. Look for the online stores that provide free shipping to make sure that online deals are actually deals.
