Preparing for College and Life with Roommates

Posted on July 27, 2010 in: Roommate Relationships

Today’s post comes from, Noah, our summer intern at WilliamPaid. Noah will be attending the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas-Austin this fall.

In less than a month, I will be moving into my new college dorm, at the University of Texas, with my three, very cool, roommates. These are the first “real” roommates I’ve ever had (although I love my sisters, they don’t really count). Of course, the four of us are going to have an unbelievable time together learning the ins and outs of campus life, the football games, etc. But, I’m really anxious to see what life is like free from parental supervision. What will I do not having my father waking me up at the crack of dawn or my mother nagging me to complete my homework? Sleep?

I have one month to get organized for my transition into college and dorm life, and I still have much to do. I need to buy the personal items that I need for my dorm, including blankets and sheets for my bed, as well as, pillows, bath towels, and containers to store my clothes and shoes. Not to mention, I will need a lamp for my desk, school supplies, and of course, my Texas Longhorn gear. Needless to say, moving into a college dorm isn’t cheap, and I haven’t even discussed the cost of living.

Being that this will be the first time I’ve lived on my own and the first time that I have truly had to account for my own expenses, I’m definitely going to need to create a budget for myself - let’s be serious, how many times can a person really eat dorm food? And, come finals, I need to make sure I have funds left over to hire a tutor should I need one! Get the picture?

Now, it’s almost August, and move-in day is getting closer and closer. Since being accepted to the University of Texas, I have yet to meet someone that doesn’t say to me “these are going to be the best four years of your life,” and I have no doubt that it will be. But, while I’m excited to be on my own, I know that this new found freedom comes with new responsibilities and challenges that I have yet to face. I have to say, I’m ready. Hook ‘em Horns!
