Sometimes there is no better medicine for the soul than mixing a little new with a bit of what you left behind. After all, a solo girl’s apartment does get a little lonely from time to time.
This week’s story begins last Thursday when a bit of home visited me through the form of an old friend - Jennifer. We easily fell into our old habits pausing conversations only for the occasional breath, but ready for something new, we decided to mix a bit of the city into our routine.
So, we left my apartment and hopped a bus to The Elbo Room to see Luna Halo, Honor by August and The Ruse. A concert only to be described in one word - incredible! And epic and amazing and…well, you get the point.
The next day, we began the typical five-hour drive back to Ohio with our brand new soundtrack to keep us company. Best. Road Trip. Ever.
Once home, I began my visits starting with my family. Not much had changed with my two brothers still up to their usual shenanigans and driving my parents crazy. Boys, the eggs are for eating, not throwing.
Then came visits to close friends. Amie was first as she had just bought a new house and was finishing major renovations - a feat that for most would be a massive undertaking, but not her. This is house number three. Something tells me this comfy home will last a little longer, though.
Later came trips to the old hangouts with my cousin, Brett. Even those hadn’t changed as I dodged people dancing to a band playing timeless classics like “Gimme Three Steps” and “Have a Drink on Me.” Talk about a complete contrast to Chicago life, but that’s a honky-tonk feel not found anywhere else.
Even the Easter holiday included comforts of old with lots of talking and eating followed by even more of the same. I wouldn’t trade my family for anything though, especially when my visit includes an hour long game of kickball in the field. Run, Jed, Run!
It was the perfect weekend and left me rejuvenated and ready for April. While I now consider my apartment home, I found a strange comfort in “coming home again” and finding that it had stayed the way I left it - full of laughter, good music and wonderful people. What are some of your favorite memories from home?

Oh Linds, this article is perfect!! I had such a great time with you and I'm so glad you had a fantastic weekend at home. Can't wait to see you again!!! (And very soon, I might add )
And I have to put in a small plug for these bands - seriously, listen to them. They all have myspace pages. Go see them if you can. Regional bands that are just as good if not better than what's on the radio is where it's at.
