8 Easy Ways to Save Money in College

Posted on February 23, 2010 in: Renter Resources

Between ever-increasing tuition, books that cost their weight in gold and the need to have some semblance of a social life, college can be draining - to your wallet. While we can’t do much about tuition and books, we can help you save a little money in the other areas of your life. Try these eight simple ways to save money.

Avoid Impulse Buys. Pick a price level and pledge to never buy anything that price or higher on the spot. You’ll be surprised at what you can live without when it requires a second trip.

Catch a Matinee. Whether it’s the theater or a movie, getting there early pays off. After all, it’s the same play or movie, right? And, you can probably save some money on an early dinner, too.

Forgo the Extras. Going to a movie? Skip the popcorn. Grabbing dinner? Stick with the entree. Many businesses try to lure customers in with great base prices and then try to sell you on the add-ons. Show them - keep your money in your pocket.

Avoid the Trends. While being fashion-forward is always fun, it is also expensive. Spend your money on classic pieces. If you are going to ’splurge’ on a trend, consider buying from a mass merchandiser like Target. If you don’t, chances are that, next year, you will be regretting the $500 purple snake-skin boots that are so last year. (And, even smarter, shop at WilliamPaid and get cash-back on your purchases!

Trim the Toiletry Budget. Forgo the high-priced salon lotions, hair products and nail polish. You can save a ton and not notice a huge difference when you purchase your toiletries from drug or beauty supply stores.

Space it Out. If you usually get your hair cut every six weeks, stretch it to seven or eight. Save up to 33% without a noticeable difference.

Spare Your Change. Put your spare change in a jar (not in a tip jar). Once or twice a year, cash it in. It’s like free money.

Forced Self-Control. If you are going shopping or out for the night, bring a limited amount of cash and no credit cards. When the money is gone, so are you.

See, that wasn’t that painful. Use the WilliamPaid Simple Savings Calculator to find more brainless and pain-free ways to save money. You won’t even feel it - except that your wallet will be heavier.
