There are many creative ways to increase storage in your small apartment. Just keep in mind that any blank wall space has the potential to become storage!

  • Use lots and lots of shelves! You can make your own shelves from a variety of unconventional items; from books to skateboards.
  • Wall hooks are also a great way to utilize any blank wall space. You can put them in any and every room.
  • Attach a sturdy shelf to your wall and then hang a rod underneath for a place to hang clothes.
  • Use a chest to double as a coffee table and provide extra storage.
  • Use other furniture that doubles as storage. You can buy both chairs and ottomans that allow you to store things inside of them while still being aesthetically pleasing.
  • With basic carpentry skills, you can make a kitchen table that folds away into the wall when not in use.
  • Store jewelry, snacks or even shoes in over-the-door shoe organizers
  • Use bed risers to increase the space under your bed. You can even purchase some that have electrical outlets built in to increase your outlet space as well.
  • File dividers can be used to store pans in your kitchen cabinets.
  • Tension rods can be easily put up and used to hang a variety of your lighter things (necklaces, scarves, ties) and staggered tension rods on your closet floor can be used to organize shoes.
  • Keep jewelry organized in ice cube trays.
  • Turn a TV tray into a foldable ironing board (or make an ironing board that folds into the wall).
  • Use shower caddies on walls to clear up desk space or organize things like small notebooks, pens and pencils and scissors.
  • Attach a CD rack to your wall and use it to store smaller items.

These storage tools can help you make the most out of a small space. If you still need more room, consider renting an off site storage unit if your apartment building doesn’t already have a storage facility on site.
