Renters: Think Green - Save the Planet and Your Money

Posted on November 2, 2009 in: Renter Resources

We all want to do what we can for the environment and save money in the process. But, as a renter, you and your roommates don’t want to invest a lot of money in your temporary residence.

First, estimate what each appliance in your apartment cost you per month to use - that will give you a sense as to where you’re spending your money (or Watts, as the case may be). Next, the EPA provides some helpful tips to cut down on your energy costs.

Bottom line, buying energy efficient appliances doesn’t really work for renters, so here are some free (or inexpensive) things you can do around your apartment to save both money and the planet:

  • When leaving home for more than 4 hours, raise the thermostat 5 to 10 degrees in the Summer and lower it by the same amount in the Winter. Do the same before bed.
  • In the Summer, close the south-, east- and west-facing curtains to keep the solar heat out. During heating season, keep curtains on south-facing windows open during the day to allow the sunlight to enter and closed at night.
  • Keep lamps and electronics away from the thermostat. The heat they generate will cause your air conditioning to work harder.
  • Use compact fluorescent light bulbs (or, better yet, LED lights).
  • Air dry dishes instead of using your dishwasher’s drying cycle.
  • Turn off your computer and monitor when not in use.
  • Consider occupancy sensors, timers or dimmers for high-use areas.
  • Clean warm-air registers, baseboard heaters and radiators, and make sure they aren’t blocked by furniture, carpeting and drapes.

  • If these are too cumbersome to tackle, the one easy way for renters to save the planet and money is to pay your bills online. You would be surprised by what you could save yourself, and the environment, by switching to electronic billing and payments - calculate your savings and PayItGreen. WilliamPaid will make it easy for you to PayItGreen even if your landlord is still into cutting down trees - you can pay your way, securely and online. Is green your new favorite color?
