Yesterday, Maryland-based Tufts University issued a university mandate for dorm roommates that has sent shock waves through media, students and roommates everywhere, and the general public.Tufts University administration has declared a new university policy: when a roommate is present, sex will not be allowed in dorm rooms. Its caused quite a stir among college students.
The “no sex while your roommate is present” rule begs the question, why? Jacques Steinberg, New York Times Education Reporter, went to the decision makers for the answer NYT: At Tufts, an Attempt to Prohibit Sex When Roommate is in the Room.
This seemingly unenforceable “no sex” University policy was established on the heels of a study from Tufts Office of Residential Life. The study found that there were numerous complaints last year from Tufts students who felt uncomfortable with what their roommates did in their shared space. Apparently, this included having sex while a roommate was still in the room. Students are reacting to the Tufts decision. One ingenious guy produced this video with helpful tips for roommates who need some alone time with the hottie who lives two doors over:
Sure, that “educational” video is good for a laugh (heck, you may have even tried Step 2), but the intent behind the new rule is to respect your roommate and your shared space - something William Paid appreciates and encourages.
We ask William Paid blog readers: is Tufts University overdoing it? Should it be as simple as discussing issues like this with your roommate at the beginning of the year? Let us know what you think! So. Does this mean socks on the door knob have lost their charm?
