Have You Cut Back Your Spending?

Posted on November 10, 2009 in: Renter Resources

A new Harris Poll finds that adults have made significant (and less significant) lifestyle changes in order to save money. According to the poll, most notable changes include:

  • 64% have been purchasing more generic brands
  • 47% are brown-bagging lunch instead of buying it
  • 43% have been going to hairdressers/barbers less often
  • 36% have switched to tap water and refillable bottles instead of bottled water (saves the environment, too)
  • 34% have canceled one or more magazine subscriptions

  • If you are looking to save money, these changes are just the tip of the iceberg - from more radical ways to save money to simple everyday changes, take a look at where you spend your money and see what you can live without.

While driven by necessity now, these changes could have a positive long-term impact - reducing spending patterns could lead to an increase in savings later on. Alternatively, use the money you save by changing your spending patterns to pay down your outstanding debt. Just look at the money you can save when you put a few extra dollars toward your student loans each month.
