The days of hibernating in your apartment during the winter are over; spring is here! The weather is starting to get nicer, the days are longer, and it’s time to finally get around to cleaning your apartment. I’m not a messy person but I definitely fall behind cleaning in the winter. It’s easier to stuff your closets with sweaters, neglect the dust on the shelves, and ignore the moldy food in the fridge. The harsh daylight of spring and summer will soon be shining through your apartment windows, so it’s time to get into spring-cleaning mode!
Get Organized
Most apartments don’t have much storage space. Spring-cleaning time is a great time to organize your closets and maximize storage space so that everything has a place and nothing is cluttered. Get plastic bins that will fit under your bed to store your sweaters and winter coats. Have old clothes, books, or kitchenware you’re not using? Donate them to reduce clutter.
Tip: Pinterest is a great place to find easy DIY storage and organization ideas for your apartment.
Clean Out Your Fridge
You know that months-old takeout container that’s been tucked away in the back of your fridge that’s starting to take on a life of its own? It’s time for that to go. Spring and summer are the times of BBQ’s and farmer’s market, so you’re going to need to clear out room in there for fresh groceries. Clean out whatever is expired and wipe down the shelves and bins.
Tip: Wash the interior with a solution of two tablespoons of baking soda for every quart of warm water and clean the nooks and crannies with a toothbrush.
Wash the Windows
You can’t close your blinds and block out the sun like you do in the winter anymore. Make your apartment less of a dungeon and let that sun shine in! Before you do that, you’re going to need to clean the dust and grime off your windows. I just use traditional Windex and it does the trick!
Tip: Clean your blinds while you’re at it. Don’t just dust them; wipe them off with a wet towel or rag.
Dust Away
Now is the time to dust those hard-to-reach places that you never get to. Get that stepladder out and dust the top of your shelves, the fridge, under the couch and bed, behind the TV, the tops of picture frames or anywhere that you’ve neglected all winter long.
Tip: Go one step further and unscrew your light bulbs and dust them off.
